Observation details
12 individuals reported on July 28 by Linus Blomqvist. Judy Holloway and I made a special field trip to see this phenomenon. 7.30.21: We arrived at 6:45 pm. Two nighthawks appeared about 7 pm. Followed gradually by 10 more until there were 12 (or up to 15) swooping over the pond by 8pm. Activities included dipping into the pond to drink, catching insects, and swooping each other. Searched carefully for female. Only one bird appeared to have a more buffy wing patch - the others had white wing patches. The birds were carefully counted multiple times throughout the evening by both of us. Settled on the number 12. We were amazed when more NH continued to appear over the hour. About 8 pm the Nighthawks began peeling off one by one: flew across the road, behind buildings, into open field and disappeared in chaparral. By 8:15 they were all gone. Other birds remained, including the LB Bats actively feeding.
