Observation details
A single individual was seen migrating low over the treetops among many Chaetura swifts in the area. Gray skies and decent lighting helped to appreciate better detail as the bird was not heavily shadowed below. This bird's large size made it immediately noticeable as 'different looking' even before getting looks through my binoculars. Its flight was noticeably labored when compared to the other 40+ swifts in the area. Its chunky, all dark body and thick, slightly notched tail gave it a heavier, longer-bodied appearance than its smaller counterparts. Its wings appeared noticeably longer in comparison to other species. Always a special bird to see given their status and distribution globally. These birds breed not far from my home in New Mexico and I have seen them many times in other parts of the western USA.
