Observation details
Found and photographed this morning in Hyde Park by Kosala Rajapaksha, and subsequently observed by multiple observers after 1430 - continuously since then. Smaller short-necked heron with black face, with white cheek line and short pale cream-yellow crown plume ending towards rear crown/nape. Red eye, thick dark slate bill, Grey body and wings with brownish-grey streaks; some narrow back plume feathers. Orange-yellow legs in evening light. Bird solitary, mainly in 1 position at rest with head slightly tucked and facing away, then head up and pivoting slowly for good views in profile. Bird also preening more frequently starting around 1900, also gave a couple of open-beaked "yawns" whilst preening and stretching a bit. During most of my photos the bird's eye was closed so it looks brownish, but also poorer quality on full zoom with my little camera.
