Observation details
Adult in semi-breeding plumage, but not in full breeding plumage as what they look like in spring. It was molting to basic plumage just around the face. Will post photo(s), very dark looking Dowitcher, dark back, all rufous below. I saw barring along the flanks and slight barring along the sides of the breast. It was close enough to hear my playback of its call notes. At first I tried the Short-billed Dowitcher and had no response. Then I played several call notes of a Long-billed Dowitcher, and it perked up and took interest in my direction. It did take flight once, that’s when I heard it's sharp high-pitched "keek" call in flight, and that it matched that of the Long-billed Dowitcher on my playback that I just used to grab its attention.
