Adult Red-headed Woodpecker at presumed nest hole
Observation details
Unmistakeable adult continuing at presumed nest hole behind house at 24 Congress St (permission needed to see this). I watched for 80 minutes and saw an adult go repeatedly to the nest hole with insects (some caught on the wing--often gypsy moths), but then eat the food itself. Sometimes it stuck its head in the hole with the insect. It perched right by the nest hole much of the time, and at one point bobbed head up and down at the hole, while calling. I never saw another bird come out of the hole. By my calculation, the nest should be hatched or just about ready to hatch, as I saw copulation on July 1.
