territory #14 singer on furthest south stream on section above confluence
Observation details
Season Summary- this day's recordings brings the final tally for this season to a total of 14 documented singers/territories on this state park's 3 stream systems located north of the horse camp, on both sides of the highway, and south of Wa-Shaw-Tee Rd. It's likely there's a 15th undocumented territory below the outflow confluence along Wa-Shaw-Tee Rd. but no singer was detected on the two passes made. ___________________________________________________________________________________ • heard a singer on territory #13 (1st recording below) next to Wa-Shaw-Tee Rd. on the lake outflow just above the ponded section that's upstream from the confluence immediately east of the private property; his initial response to playback included a few sputtering territorial defense sequences with little or no preceding song (2nd recording below); he was audible as far upstream as the midway ponded section and there's not much additional stream just below the dam so presumably this is the same singer we heard from the dam but weren't able record on our visit 3 weeks earlier (intro note pattern is the same) • on the furthest south stream, in the vicinity of where we had exited on our prior visit, a bird initially responded to playback with limited chiching but then completely ignored our subsequent playback deliveries and flew a short distance upstream to a wide flat muddy seep area (a setting Louies are often found foraging on); its lack of territorial response, giss, and breast plumage suggested it was immature (photos below) • on the section of the furthest south stream above its confluence with the outflow, a singer on territory #14 responded to playback (3rd recording below); this stretch of the ravine widens and has a boggy grassy center but small streams in deep shade along both sides provide good habitat • a ways further downstream but still well above the confluence with the outflow, a bird was heard chiching from the shadows on a stream along the edge, but when we issued playback it fell silent; its response suggested it was immature but that was unconfirmed • just above the confluence encountered another chicher that fell silent when we issued playback, and then not far below the confluence on the stream that parallels the road heard more chiching so possibly the same individual; its response to playback suggested an immature bird but that was unconfirmed
