Media notes
Photo was digiscoped by Dave Slager. He posted more photos as well. I wanted to make sure he was accredited properly.
Observation details
Bird spotted by Dave. It was sitting on the water. Watched for close to 15 minutes. May have been sleeping. Current was moving the bird north and further away. I was tracking a drake surf scoter from the north moving south which landed next to the auklet and 2 gulls. Tiny bird, half the size or less of the surf scoter. Immediately ruled out rhino auklet. Smaller. Dark body, grey-black tones. White undertail covert (only white noted). Tiny bill with a round head. The bill was a lighter shade than body. While debating merits of characteristics and ruling out other species, a jaeger zipped by, followed by Merlin directly overhead. Then tracking back to the cassins, an Orca pod rolled through moving south. Dave may have digiscope photos. Attempted to get them. Marbled murrelet ruled out due to head shape and bill characteristics. No white or lighter tones on the neck or breast as expected with marbled or ancient murrelets. Dave should be reporting as well.
