Observation details
A small gull, long slender body plan with very long wings accentuating the slender profile. Did not have the obvious ear mark of a winter bird, sooty grey on the head and nape area. Fairly straight, entirely black bill, all the way into the face, no hint or sings of colored tip, or coloration at base of bill. Pinkish legs. Bird never took flight, was walking around in a few inches of water the entire time, actively feeding from the ground. No other gulls present on the lake. I've determined this (along with help from facebook Gulls of NA group) to be a 1st year SAGU, which lacks the colored tip of bill. The long slender body plan, general bill shape, and entirely black bill all match. I initially called this a BOGU but was very unsure about that (due to general shape AND seasonality).
