Observation details
First territorial male perched on top of saguaro across from the first picnic table for at least 15 minutes. He sang briefly twice and once did a short, low flight around the area. Then he abruptly flew straight away to the east. I spotted him in the same general area on my way out, and observed him entering a cavity near the top of the same saguaro (32.201389,-111.125278), about 22-24’ up, orientation 225°. Female soaring nearby. Another paired male observed perched atop a saguaro on the short part of the Ironwood Loop Trail. He also flew to a couple of nearby ocotillos, recently leafed out after the rain, picked off some leaves, and carried them away. I did not see where he took them, but he flew in the direction of the saguaro that I later saw him go into. I refound him perched on another ocotillo and then the female appeared soaring low nearby, and which point the male flew directly to a nearby saguaro and entered a cavity (32.196111,-111.138333). I saw him emerge, fly around, re-enter the cavity, and then emerge again. As he perched on a nearby saguaro, the female continue to fly around the area and then returned and entered the cavity with ocotillo leaves. Cavity is in a lower arm, about 14-16’ above ground, orientation 187°.
