Observation details
A dark-morph juvenile bathing in the lake. Black overall, though the neck and nape were slightly grayer, giving a hint of the jaeger-like cap. This made it look like the 'intermediate adult breeding' in Sibley, except that it had a silvery bill with a black tip and lacked long tail feathers, so I believe it was a juvenile. The bill shape, body shape, and lack of white barring seem to exclude Pomeraine or Long-tailed. I suppose the next closest thing would be a Heerman’s Gull juvenile, but I know that species well and can exclude it based on body and bill shape and coloration. I tried digiscoping & using my camera, but could only manage terrible pictures (attached).
