Observation details
Estimate. At one point CB observed a female plumaged bird foraging on the ground. Impression was that the bird had a somewhat muted face pattern, a bill that appeared to have some curve to the culmen, and lacking an apparent pale eyering. Color overall seemed to have slight olive cast, and dorsal streaking was not particularly crisp as in CAFI. Also, in this general area was an unseen songster that sounded good for PUFI. Song attached. Consensus of two expert Sierra birders is that the recording is consistent with PUFI, favoring that over CAFI. CAFI is the expected species at this elevation and conifer area lacking oaks (fide Steve Rose).
