Observation details
I think it is now safe to say these birds are attempting to nest here! TWO males were first observed today by Enid W.; One I will now call "the sentinel," was faithfully perched and singing just beyond the 3rd utility pole where it is being consistently observed over time. The second male bird (which didn't seem to have as much yellow or black on the breast) I'll call the "newcomer," sang from a perch on the barbwire/chain linked fenced in area of the Vermont gas pipe line near the Charlotte Road. The female was only seen briefly (second day in a row I only saw her for a very short time). She appeared on the utility line in the same area as the sentinel's post, then dropped into the tall grass in the same vicinity as yesterday on the east side of the road. This possible nesting site is about 30-40 feet east of the road and a similar distance north of where the farmer just cut the field. AUDIO RECORDINGS: The first recording, "newcomer Dickcissel," was made standing within 30 feet of the bird. The second recording has both Dickcissels singing, and the sonagram shows distinctions between their vocalizations because of volume. I made the second recording while standing mid point between the two birds, first facing toward the Charlotte Road (until I say "south") and then facing north.
