Media notes
Brewer's Sparrow at Refugio State Beach, Santa Barbara County, CA
Observation details
Observed this small brown sparrow bathing in the estuary near the actual creek mouth. I photographed it as it flew from the water and perched on a boulder. I initially suspected Brewer's Sparrow but it was difficult to see key marks because it was so wet and feathering was matted in places. Photos reveal the pale lores and what looks like a whitish eye ring. The rump color is brownish unlike the gray rump of Chipping Sparrow. The bird showed a contrasting gray nape similar to Chipping Sparrow but there does appear to be streaking along the back of the nape which points to Brewer's Sparrow. The bird was non-vocal and did not respond to Brewer's Sparrow call playback so it was lost in the shrubs next to the creek and not seen again. Additional opinions of these photos settled on Brewer's Sparrow.
