Observation details
We were just playing frisbee on the south shore when I suddenly see a sandpiper on the beach! I have very little experience with sandpipers in general, so I didn't know what I was looking at until we were driving home and I was able to look in my field guide. However, we (and especially my mom) got some great pictures of it, and we determined it was a Sanderling! This bird had a thicker black beak that was roughly the same length as its head. It had an overall a soft gray head. However it had a white eyebrow, dark lores, and the gray on its cheek looked a little darker than the rest of the gray on its head. The mantle had dark streaks on it. The feathers on the upper part of its wing (when it was folded) were dark with lighter edges. The lower folded wing was more plain-looking. It had black legs. The most distinctive field mark seemed to be the black shoulder with the white above it and gray above that. Its belly was plain white. I think this is a park first!!! Pictures are available, I'll try to attach them.
