Observation details
Highlight of the trip. Bird stood out initially as it was smaller than a Crested Tern with a bright white appearance. As the boat was stopped the bird came up close to boat and provided excellent views for all onboard. Many photographs taken. Appearance: Non-breeding bird with a solid white rump, clearly forked tailed and clearly defined dark unbroken trailing edge to underwing primaries. The latter feature rules out Common and White-fronted Tern. Outer edges of the outermost tail feathers were contrastingly black which ruled out the much rarer Antarctic Tern. Behaviour: the bird had a very graceful flight. Instead of dive bombing, it would drop down then gently pluck food from the surface to feed.
