Observation details
0715 - 0735 hrs. Singing male. Recording attached. Classic buzzy, rapid, ascending “zeer zeer zeer zz-zz-zz-zee” songbouts. The male appeared to be holding a territory. It covered a circular territory boundary in the canopy and then sang repeatedly from a single perch. Habitat “barely inside the line” for this species’ preference in my view. Understory was a bit grown up as compared to their classic habitat preference; tree height was perhaps a touch shorter than my Frontenac Arch search image. Tree species composition included sugar maple, bitternut hickory and white oak. Neighbouring songsters included two YTVI (the strongest indicator species of possible CERW habitat in e ON, in my experience). We backtracked to the site between 1030-1032 hrs and did not hear the bird. By then, a large percentage of forest songsters had gone silent, however. Excited by the date of this observation, as by the second week of June, most if not all Cerulean males are holding territories (unlike the second to fourth week of May, when migrants are still filing in, and transitory males are more or less expected in areas with promising habitat). A Species At Risk prone to harassment/disturbance. Exact location suppressed.
