Observation details
Apparent first state record found by Betsy Bartelt, Ryan Brady, and Tim Oksiuta. Viewed at distances above a half mile for several hours but lake was very calm and light was good, making for pretty decent scope views. Photos coming, seen by many observers. White patch on flank very consistently observed - basically there was no position this bird was in where we could not prominently see the white flanks. When the bird was facing away from us, the white patches were like 2 obvious tail-lights. White flank largest around rear legs, but depending on body position it occupied rear 2/3 of flank at waterline. Breeding plumage, with black body but lines of white speckling on body and white lines on neck. Frosty gray back of the head. Head shape at times less obviously round, slightly more angular, compared to PALO, although hard to be sure about such a characteristic.
