Wilson's Plover at Carpinteria Salt Marsh Reserve, Santa Barbara County, CA
Observation details
Continuing bird. Seen and photographed by many. Not much larger than Semipalmated Plovers, many of which were in direct comparison. Noted large, thick and longish black bill. White below and light brown above but in heavy molt with darker feathering on mantle and secondary coverts. Brownish cheek and ear coverts but contrasted by white forehead. Large black eye. Also had a brownish (slightly rusty) single upper breast band that was broader at the sides and forming a thin line at mid-breast. Legs dull pinkish. Often sat motionless, but when feeding it would run in between stops where it would peck at the sand for invertebrates. Observed it fly once. Wings in heavy molt with nearly all secondaries short and only outer two primaries at apparent full length. Digiscoped in poor light:
