Observation details
Heard only. Back in Hog Island Gut area (via kayak) where I have found them in past years. 2 were communicating with each other on the same side of the marsh using their "cooing'/very soft calls (tended to be about 3 notes that sound like a hollow "cu cu cu"). Very familiar with this call when finding them in the past. Another one made a couple of calls about 100 yards away on another marsh island where I've also heard/seen them before. None of them revealed themselves, which usually happens in the past as they tend to fly out of the reeds when anyone approaches within say 50 yards of their location. I stayed in the area for about 10 minutes trying to get a good recording but couldn't due to several factors — cicada chorus/GW parkway ambiance noise/the Bitterns were just deep enough in the marsh grasses to muffle their calls. Here is one poor recording — calls are approximately at .85s/5.5s/8.5s/13.5s.
