Migrating CHSW entering roost chimney, 20:01, September 4, 2016, Raleigh, Wake County, NC. Still image from a 30-second movie
Observation details
Counted by several people as this huge migratory flock gathered over a half hour. Based on counting 100 birds and estimating the number of groups of 100 as the flock swirled. Approximate size of flock tonight; greatest numbers between 7:50 pm and 8:10 pm. Only a few birds at 7 pm but increased rapidly over the 45 minutes. The flock was swirling and forming various shapes as the birds circled two chimneys between Hargett, Salisbury, and McDowell. They "decided" on the News and Observer chimney (215 S McDowell Street) directly west of the parking garage (we watched from the top of the parking garage at 214 S Salisbury). Various media: photos, films. audio. NOTE: A few bats were interspersed in the swift flock just a few minutes before the birds entered the roost chimney.
