Observation details
Adult in Alternate/breeding plumage. Located approx.1: 30pm on Main Pool side of MNWR opposite Benning Marsh on auto loop. (There had recently been some clearing of dense cattails in this general area). At first I thought it was a moulting Stilt Sandpiper. I could see reddish blotches on the underparts of a Dunlin sized shorebird, and became suspicious that it could be a CUSA. I confirmed that the reddish markings below didn't at all suit a STSA. I noted that the legs were indeed greyish black (not yellowish-green), and that this was not a result of dirt being on the legs. (Word out by call phone at the Petrol Station on CRT 20 to birders at Cornell). Eventually seen by other area birders including Steve Kelling and Geo Keoppal. Photos of sketches and notes taken of the bird included below. These notes submitted and accepted by NYSARC. NYSARC # 1998-45-A/B, See Kingbird Vol.51 No.1 - 1998 NYSARC Annual Report for additional details of circumstance and observers. https://nybirds.org/NYSARC/Reports/NYSARC1998.html Curlew Sandpiper (Calidris ferruginea) "1998-45-A/B, One adult at Montezuma NWR, Town of Tyre, Seneca Co., on 12 Aug 1998 (Gerard Phillips, Karl David). Although not photographed, the detailed descriptions (supported by an informative sketch by Gerard Phillips) indicate an adult in molt from alternate to basic plumage. The vast majority of New York State's Curlew Sandpiper records (in excess of 100) are from Long Island where the species is close to annual. As a whole, Curlew Sandpipers appear to have been less common along the east coast during the 1990's compared to the 19970-80's. The Montezuma record is only the third for upstate New York. Prior records are from Seneca Falls on 15 May 1982 and Iroquois NWR in 30-31 July 1990." This was the first record of this species for the MNWR complex.
