Observation details
Flashed a pair on a hiking trail, they were standing on the ground and flew away from me downward the mountain side into the lower trees' canopy. Their shape, size and flight reminded me of grouses. Coloration: grayish brown with small white spots and a white patch at the nape or maybe slightly lower. I heard a loud whirring sound as they took off and were flying. I was at about 1650m elevation in a dense mixed coniferous forest, although about 15 mins away on foot at 1600m elevation there were alder trees along a creek and lots of birch. The birds are not in the picture, I put it here to show habitat. My best guess was Hazel Grouse, but am not sure.
