Observation details
I had watched an otter eat something on the shore earlier (crayfish) and it had disappeared. This female mallard and ducklings were foraging in a very well-spaced group for quite a while. Then the female suddenly sounded the alarm and took off, leaving the ducklings in a much tighter group than before. She flew in the direction where I'd seen the otter (maybe 40 meters from where she left the ducklings) and appeared to make contact with the water. I saw the otter surface nearby a minute or so later. It appeared she might be mobbing the otter. She then flew back to the ducklings and in tight formation they rapidly crossed to the other side of the lake. I saw them not long after out of the water on a tiny grassy island.
