Media notes
Identification probable. Descending whistle call heard at night, birds not seen, but there does not seem to be anything else this could be. These vocalizations closely match several other Meliarchus calls, but this exact vocalization I heard only at night, during which time no other call types were made. Birds called infrequently from ca. 01:30-05:30, vocalizing every ca. 5 min, with at least 3 calling in the vicinity of camp. At dawn, they reverted to more typical Meliarchus calls. 530m elev.
Observation details
Calling at night on a moonlit night. I was surprised to hear this species calling, and apparently moving around at night, particularly since they only gave a single call after dark (see recording). Birds not seen, but I can't think of anything else this could be.
