Observation details
Lifer! Heard singing somewhere fairly close to the dirt road in grass. The song was two pairs of notes that reminded me just a little of a Black Phoebe in their relative pitches and rhythm, although this song is faster, and lower-pitched overall. I've gone back and looked at old photos and videos from this trip before I had ever heard of birding probably dozens of times now, trying to figure out what birds I saw. But it only somewhat recently occurred to me that I could also listen to the video clips I have and add heard-only birds. After pouring through recordings of more than 20 species of flycatchers, I finally felt confident enough to call this identified on 5/28/21. In the recording you can hear me let out an audible "wow". That's because the video I took this audio file from was of a lioness on the prowl. I can't say for certain if it was just dumb luck or if I really have a special knack for spotting wildlife, but while we were on this safari, I was pretty much always the one to point out animals we would have otherwise driven past, including this lioness who started out at least 100 yards away from us in grass that came up to her shoulders when I called her out. The "wow" happened when she walked right past our parked land cruiser to cross the road. I'm quite certain I made no conscious note of the bird singing in the background, but just based on the number of recordings on eBird, it seems like I was quite lucky to have captured it. This is now just the 9th recording of this species on eBird. Although it's not in chronological order, this is also the 200th unique genera on my life list!
