Observation details
First spotted yesterday by Kai Mills on May 17. Spotted flying into bottlebrush trees near King’s Court bridge while with Owen. Soon after the bird flew into a deciduous tree, then after Torrey and Kai arrived, we all spotted the bird fly back into bottlebrush trees and snack on bees. We noted its redness while flying. All-reddish male (though not nearly as strikingly red as the Morro Bay male seen by multiple birders this year). Reddish because it is very streaky with yellowish-white, with a whitish/yellowish-red belly. Its tail is a brighter red, and wings more purplish-red. Bits of odd coloring or, discoloration, almost a gray amidst its nasal tufts and lores and fore-supercillium. Large bill, head not extremely pointy. Broken-pale eyering. Rounded primaries extended not quite to the end of red, clean undertail coverts. Photos.
