Observation details
Initially heard the two note song repeated continually for about 15-20 seconds upon arrival to the parking lot in front of the nature trail. We quickly tried to get our gear and walk toward where we were hearing the song coming from. Definite cuckoo-like song, but not the single note more associated with the Yellow-billed. This was a consistent two note song about one pair every second. It would stop briefly and then continue on, but given the distance to where the bird may have been in the trees, it could have just been turning its head and singing in a different direction away from us. I was able to get a quick recording of a few of the two note songs (sorry for the movement in the second set of notes). We were walking toward the sound, which took us more toward the World of Energy building. The sound was coming from the tree line across the lawn from the World of Energy entrance, back toward the barricades and fence. As we walked slowly toward the sound, two Ravens cawed loudly behind us and flew in and immediately caused a ruckus as lots of birds flew up from the grass and trees. A couple Mockingbirds started mobbing them and chased them off. Things settled down for just a bit, and then the Osprey flew over calling continually. The Black-billed Cuckoo was not heard again after all of that commotion, as many of the birds didn't return back to the lawn or the nearby trees. We ate a quick dinner and stayed for almost two hours waiting to hear any more possible sounds of the Black-billed. We walked the nature trail and also around the World of Energy building and all around the parking lot, but did not hear the song again. A Red-tailed Hawk came in and perched in the trees and took a pass at a couple of squirrels around the same area where we had heard it before, so it may have just moved on or remained quiet the rest of the time.
