Observation details
First year male. Discovered by the homeowner about a week prior to my visit. Yellow head extending onto the upper breast, with some whitish streaking/mottling on the breast, black mask over eyes, body and wings dark brown with a hint of the white wing patch developing. Crown dark brown. Calling and "singing" at times, throwing its head to the side when emitting the buzzy electronic-like sound. At one point it moved to the nearby field and was chased briefly by a male Red-winged Blackbird. This represents the third county record. Two previous county records are listed in Birds of Western Pennsylvania by W.E Clyde Todd, University of Pittsburgh Press, 1940. One was in Wilkinsburg April 26, 1895 and another was in Turtle Creek April 13, 1928. A long overdue vagrant to the county and a most welcomed one!
