Observation details
First heard at 8:17, 12 minutes after sunset. A few minutes later, we briefly saw a poorwill fly over the hill north of the Calero Creek Trail. Just before 8:30, we heard more poorwill calls, and a few minutes later we saw one poorwill flying over the hill from around 37.203434, -121.810302. This bird was close enough that we could hear the poor-will-ip, third part of the call, which we didn't hear at any other point. It was then joined by a second poorwill, and then both of them landed in a bush about 15 yards above the trail! They stayed there for about 30 seconds, during which their silhouettes were visible against the fading light in the sky. Then they both flew over the trail about 10 feet over my head, which was amazing. We continued to heard poorwill calls from the field south of the trail every now and then, and heading back to the car we heard another poorwill calling east of the stile ranch trail, so there were a minimum of three birds, and possibly 4-5.
