Observation details
This Empidonax was just off the end of the Sportsman Camp part of the boardwalk in some slash pine and brush. The bird never went more than 5 to 10 feet up in the tree. The bird called briefly its distinctive "pip" call three times which is the giveaway for its identification for me. The photos were a little distant (one just shows the shape) but it does show that the bird is an Empidonax. Complete eyering but not as thick as most other empids except for willow flycatchers which often have no perceivable eyering. Wingtips appeared long and sharp, which would make some sense for a long-distance migrant. Very grayish, not showing any greenish tones compared to most acadian flycatchers I find in migration. Empids are really tough to i.d. but the call notes and other characteristics of this bird makes me comfortable with the identification. Without the call notes I would just call it Empid. sp.
