Observation details
Heard 2 series of hooting (about 5 minutes apart) shortly before 2 a.m. It was loud enough to hear in the house with the windows were closed so I got up and opened the backdoor to hear better and possibly see the owl perched in the trees. I did not hear anymore hooting but about 5 minutes later I heard a loud squawking sound coming from the wet forest area behind our yard. The sound was being repeated every 10 seconds or so and included occasional bill clapping sounds. I didn't recognize the call but suspected it might be a bark of the owl or possibly a juvenile. I managed to record it for a couple of minutes and I ran it through the Bird-net app which did not provide any high confidence matches but suggested a BCNH as a possibility. I checked other BCNH sounds and did not find a convincing match. Short clip of the recording appended (other clips available).
