Observation details
Seen roosting on a mud flat on the Rio Grande in the company of a flock of Blue-winged Teal. The mud flat was at the southern most end of the Resaca Trail where it parallels the Rio Grande, and was visible at the southern-most break in the wall of salt-cedar/willow bordering the river. Appeared to be a young bird based on the paler, dusky-flesh colored base of the bill. Legs were dull flesh colored. Though at the time the bill did seem rather short and "gull-billed," the pale legs and pale base of the bill seems to rule out Gull-billed Tern (as does bill length and structure, which was more apparent after looking at the photos.
