Observation details
******First state record. I managed to make it out on the first night that word got out, and was able to enjoy this bird in the evening. Tall graceful crane feeding in the grass with 4 Canada geese. Unmistakable: gray body with black around the wings, with a black bottom of neck/top of head, and white sides to the face down the sides of the neck. I didn’t note it due to distance but the bird apparently has a bit of red on the crown as well. Bill was a sort of intermediate between a dark bone cream and grey. At 8:40 PM, the crane and geese lifted off as one flock and flew west-northwest towards Samish Island, with the crane leading the flock. It seems that they roosted in that area overnight and returned to the same field today! Bird had no tags or feather wear, and acted wary of all sounds and movement.
