Observation details
We heard a commotion, came outside, and an adult female Cooper’s Hawk had grabbed a kingfisher. It could barely fly with the kingfisher in its talons and it took the kingfisher a long time to die unfortunately. The hawk would take off, fly a distance of 15 feet, just off the ground and then drop to the ground. While in the air, the kingfisher would open its wings and make crazy alarm calls. We came back a few hours later and all that was left was a pile of feathers and a fresh dropping from the hawk. In the photo the hawk is holding the kingfisher but it's hidden by the grass.
