Ruddy Turnstone - good view of its white throat
Observation details
**Casual to very rare in the state. A review species for AZ. For directions to this bird check this link: http://birding.aba.org/message.php?mesid=1161211&MLID=AZ&MLNM=Arizona%20and%20New%20Mexico I believe this bird was in juvenile plumage. I noted the chunky shape with a fairly small head, short triangular bill, short legs, white belly and undertail coverts, black breast, brownish head, and dark wings (when perched). When in flight I saw the white back and white beginning of the tail feathers separated by a black rump band, a white wing stripe, white shoulders all on overall dark colored wings. The tail feathers were tipped with white as well. The ID clinchers which separated our bird from a Black Turnstone were the bold white throat, orange legs, brown head, brownish coloring in wings, etc.
