Observation details
Slightly early of 20 Apr average spring arrival date. Singing male, heard first, then seen high up in the canopy. Consistent red plumage across body with bulky, yellowish bill. Some black edging to the wings but not across them like Scarlet Tanager, and no black on face, red bill or red crest like Northern Cardinal. Voice recorded & photographed. Personal first-of-spring in Virginia Beach.
