Intersex
Observation details
Photo flagged as unconfirmed - this was a striking bird in the field and appears to be an intersex Northern Pintail. In this case, “intersex” refers to a female that has developed male plumage characteristics due to a hormone disruption, a phenomenon documented in many duck species. Structurally this individual shows no indication of hybridization, and the plumage closely matches Northern Pintail male alternate, but duller and with extensive and relatively coarse vermiculation on the flanks, which is characteristic of intersex individuals of this species.
