Media notes
Two types of calls are heard in this recording: one is the common "cherry-up" flight call, but the other is the reason I made this recording. it appears to be an interaction call, used when two or more SEPL encountered each other on the mudflat. The birds were actively chasing and confronting each other, perhaps in courtship or in the defense of prime feeding areas, and making this call, a "che che che" that occasionally was strung together into a fast, descending "chchchchchch..." Also heard in the background (and sometimes foreground) of this recording were Killdeer, Lesser Yellowlegs, and Dickcissel. Habitat was open mudflat with patches of shallow water, in an impoundment.
