Observation details
After finding the first BBWO of the day, we were on the lookout for possible other ones. I suggested following this drumming, and Jeff MacQueen initially found and identified the bird. This woodpecker was pecking in a spruce stand, to the north of Steam Mill Brook and between the unnamed beaver pond and Stannard Pond. She was probably a quarter of a mile from the first BBWO; luckily, this woodpecker was female, as evident by the lack of the yellow poll. A black woodpecker with extensive black on the back, a dark cap, a gently rounded head, barred flanks and small spots on the outer remiges. She vocalised several times, making the kip or pik call. She flew off at one point to the west, and not followed for an audio recording. Photographed.
