Observation details
Having seen the report by Kris Ohlenkamp yesterday, Sandy Koonce and I decided to go see if we could confirm the sighting. The male Ruddy Ground-Dove was visible immediately upon arriving, though it soon flew into a willow. It spent a fair bit of time on the grass with cowbirds and a fair bit of time in the trees after that. It was fairly shy. It was a small dove about the same size as the cowbirds. The overall rufous-brown coloration was easily apparent. Bill was mostly grayish, blackish towards tip. The top of the head and nape were a gray color, which to me almost seemed bluish in some lighting. The back and wings were a medium reddish brown with black speckling on the scapulars and coverts. Tail was reddish-brown and short. Underparts were clean and pale. Legs pink and without bands (confirmed from photos).
