Observation details
Observed 1 briefly in a small window through phrags for about 15 seconds. Could see it from head to toe, mostly from the front as it stood still. Precious and secretive. What first stood out to me was bright reddish-orange and gray bicolored bill and orangey color of the front of bird. My first experience seeing a VIRA and was surprised at how small it seemed as I had imagined it slightly larger but makes sense as to why they are so difficult to see. Observed head on displaying its "lateral compression", a feature of rails, making it look thin from head on. Heard grunt calls of 2 simultaneously, one coming from phrags, which I suspect was the one observed, and other from cattails beyond. I also heard one calling further to the left or northwest of where the 2 were heard simultaneously; may have been a third. Heard grunts about 5 times while there. Unfortunately no photos as I was without camera. Have audio.
