Observation details
***Stakeout found earlier today by Fran and Sue Murphy. When we first saw it, it was perched on a distant utility wire to the west, but otherwise was perched on barbed wire fence, often on lower wires on both sides of the road. We saw it successfully catch at least six insects while we watched. It perched on wires or sallying for insects almost the entire time. Perched briefly on the ground twice. Bird appears to be 1st-cycle nominate Tyrannus savana savana with relatively darker upperparts (still contrasting with dark cap, but more much less so than in Tyrannus savana monachus). Age at this time of year also strongly suggestive of a nominate bird. Age by relatively short tail, and crown showing mix of heavily worn brownish feathers and replaced glossy black feathers, as well as wing coverts with crisp edging. The homeowner on the southwest side of where the bird is hanging out is probably best avoided. Everyone else we talked to was very nice, understanding, and even a bit excited. Traffic surprisingly heavy.
