Observation details
Continuing, discovered the previous day. Many birders were on site when I arrived. Just as I was setting up to look for it, a peregrine spooked the entire flock. I had the small satisfaction of finding it for myself in the adjacent cell to which it had flown (I was actually able to isolate it from the flock while it was in flight and follow its flight path in order to locate it - small miracle for my limited shorebird experience). A couple of other birders who had been watching it earlier confirmed it for me. The next hour was rewarded with extended observation (along with the entire birding crowd). Thankfully my poor photos will not be necessary to document it for posterity - lots of impressive birders and equipment on site. It was comparable in size and general structure to nearby Pectoral sandpipers - with which it seemed to associate with more than the other shorebirds during my observation time. Rufous cap, light/white supercilium, rufous coloring appeared to be present on the chest, significant speckled barring extending from neck to chest and along the flanks, distinguished it significantly from all of the other shorebirds present. Lacked any defined line on chest like pectorals. Fed extensively with entire bill and face often submerged. Also watched it bath and preen.
