Observation details
One of the most epic birds ever seen in Florida! A male _alba_, mostly in first-alternate plumage that was found the day before by David Faintich, Dency Kahn, and Dave Pierce from St. Louis. The bird remained for 75 minutes this day (I observed it for 30 minutes because I left the park after waiting for more than 4 hours). Lyn Atherton arrived literally seconds too late (she was in the parking lot when the bird flew off to the east), and Ron Smith arrived about five minutes later. The wagtail was not seen again until 22 March, despite all-day searches on 20, 24, 25, and 26 March, and less-intensive searches on 21 and 23 March. I wrote a paper, "First record of the White Wagtail in Florida," which was published in Florida Field Naturalist 35:119-123, 2007. The White Wagtail was added to the Official Florida Bird List as species #500!.
