Observation details
Continuing at the old stone cistern and defunct orchard nearer to the State line than the ranch house. Heard and seen on two occasions (on the hike in and out of the canyon). Approximately the size of a Black-tailed Gnatcatcher, with a proportionately longer bill. Wings showed some brownish coloration, though this doesn't rule out Black-tailed. Under tail pattern showed what appeared to be quite a bit of graduated white, which suggests Black-capped rather than Black-tailed, which would be expected to show darker undertail coverts whit white spotting near the tips. Call was much more robust than a Blue-gray, and not quite as musical. However, it sounded more musical than a Black-tailed. More robust in quality than a Blue-gray, but not as hoarse and grating as a Black-tailed. Mouser Williams, Nancy Hetrick, and Jerry Oldenettel also got photos. Below are the best ones I could muster.
