Observation details
**Very rare; would represent second fully documented Cape May Co. record. Adult flying east over bay by itself at about 10:30; tentatively identified in the field, with confirmation from photos later. Bird was in view for about 10-15 seconds, with closest approach ca. 100-150 yards. Medium-size gull with relatively slender proportions and overall shape most reminiscent of LBBG; flight style relatively quick and direct; dark eye on round head, fairly slender/yellow bill with red and black spots apparent from photos, "frowny" gape also seemingly evident from a couple photos; upperwings a plain gray that immediately stood out as darker than expected for HERG/RBGU but not as dark as LBBG, with strong white trailing edge; extensive black wingtips with obvious white mirrors on p9 and especially p10; dusky gray band on underwing extended through secondaries and inner primaries; legs tucked in and not visible.
