Observation details
Continuing. Found by Jim Crites. Spent most of the time in the large tree just west of the Butterfly Garden/large circular garden bed and in the line of small trees and bushes that line the western path of the same bed. Small flycatcher, yellow front with a vested appearance. Brightest yellow on center of breast and undertail coverts. Full eye ring slightly wider at the back. Rounded head. Saw just a feather or two at the back of the crown that could have become a crest. Head finally got a crest while it was actively calling and flycatching at the same time. Bill is black on top and orange below with just a smudge of dark near the tip as seen with the scope - got great looks of the underside in the sunlight a couple of times. Looked almost all dark with my bins or in the shade with the scope. Buffy double wing bars, tertiaries and secondaries lined in buff but not the primaries. Wing coloration looks most like a Sibley Dusky 1st winter to me but with a little more buff rather than white on the edges of the tertiaries and secondaries. Primary projection appeared long to me and the tips rested just past the undertail coverts. Tail slightly notched most of the time, once had stronger notch, and no notch a few times. Tail appeared same width all the way down but much thinner the one time the tail was strongly notched. Appeared slightly narrower at the base when viewed from behind. Appeared short tailed most of the time. Flicks tail downward when it lands, usually only once. Lightly flicked tail upwards while calling. Flycatching from mid to high story. (Mid in shrubs and high in a large tree.) The majority of the time it was round-headed and barely notched or square-tailed. Have a recording of it calling.
