Media notes
I had earlier seen the bird in the open window of triple branches, and when motion returned to the area I snapped this photo. I may have captured the male summer tanager in the upper left corner (color is right) but it may also be a red leaf as there were other red leaves on the tree.
Observation details
heard the three-note call note near the weather station as Chuck Vaughn described to me ...in box elder tree, which drew my attention as it is different than the WETA call note. I could see motion of bird(s) in the tree but could not visualize. Finally saw a female-type Western Tanager, but could still see other movement. At 8:00 AM prompt the male Summer Tanager popped into view in the box elder for about 5 seconds.... saw through binocs. I had no time to photograph despite my camera at my side. Overall dull red color with patches of what looked like gray .... but the bird was not lit by the sun. Definitely a tanager. The bill was much heavier and robust that WETA. I suspect a mature male tanager in molt, but I am not 100% certain that it is not a first year bird.
