Observation details
Continuing bird first spotted by Phil and Caleb Helsel yesterday evening. Delighted to see this gorgeous kite. Elegant pale kite with namesake white tail, charcoal black shoulders, gray back and wings, yellowy cere, black bill, red eyes, and dark eye patches. First seen flying from the river trail at 07:42. We ran up the hillside to watch the bird hovering and hunting over the prairie with white tail flared. Subsequently, the bird perched on a bare tree limb and tore into its prize prey: a rat. We saw the kite again perching and preening on a prairie snag as we returned to the old barn area from our walk. Photos to follow.
