Observation details
Eastern end of Pond 8. In mixed flock of Least and mostly Western Sandpipers. Though this identification can be extremely difficult, this individual is a classic Semipalmated juvenile. This bird exhibits the classic short, relatively stout, blunt-tipped bill which eliminates other peeps. Also notice the uniform scaly back of a juvenile Semiplamated without the rufous tones of a Western Sandpiper. Dark legs also eliminate Least Sandpiper. Be skeptical of this identification without good pictures.
